# Add a new research project

> **Prerequisite:** You must have the **Organisation Manager** or **Organisation Faculty** role to perform this action. Read more about [Roles and Permissions](https://docs.nuvolos.com/administration/roles).

### Set up a research project

Research projects are spaces in Nuvolos where researchers can store and work on their code and data. For more details on managing spaces, see the [Space Management Guide](https://docs.nuvolos.com/administration/space-management).

To create a new research space, take the following steps:

1. Navigate to your organisation dashboard.
2. Find the **New Research Project** button on the dashboard. If you already have at least three research projects, the button is located at the bottom of the "Recent Projects" area.
3. Click **New Research Project**.
4. Create a name, and a description. The name has to be unique organisation-wide - try to give descriptive, unique names. You can change both the name and description later.
5. Choose a visibility option. Private is almost always the right choice.
6. *(Optional)* You can add a `README.md` format description at this time or later.
7. Click the **+ ADD SPACE** button.
8. *(Optional)* The next screen gives you the option to create an application in the "Master instance" immediately, but you can do this any time you want later as well from the Applications screen of the instance.
9. Finally, you can either directly navigate to the project or move back to the dashboard.

Beside the visibility of the project, all other properties can be changed at any point later as well.
